Rescuers struggled through mud and debris for a seventh day on Tuesday as the death toll from glacial floods along the China-Nepal border climbed to at least 955, with nearly 4,500 people still missing, according to officials and aid groups.

The disaster began on Aug. 27 when a glacier collapse triggered tsunami-like floods that roared down from the border, devastating villages and towns in Nepal and Tibet. Nepal’s Home Affairs Ministry said 20,600 personnel had been mobilized, with more than 3,100 people rescued so far. Army personnel were seen unloading bodies from helicopters in Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, where debris has obstructed nine hydropower tunnels under construction, trapping over 900 workers from Nepal, South Korea and China, according to IntelliNews .

Save the Children warned of catastrophic hygiene conditions in the disaster zone, with decomposing human and animal remains, uncollected waste and stagnant water increasing health risks. Tara Chettry, the NGO’s country director in Nepal, said overcrowded shelters, contaminated water and poor sanitation created ideal conditions for disease outbreaks, particularly cholera and dengue fever .

Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah described the disaster as “unimaginable and heartbreaking.” In Chitwan district, army personnel carried dead victims in blue body bags along a dirt road, while rescue teams raced to free around 100 hydropower workers believed trapped in tunnels, digging through sludge and blocked routes .

The floods also disrupted international travel, with families searching for missing relatives. Gunjan Thakkar, whose sister Poonam Thakkar, 42, traveled to the region for a Hindu pilgrimage near Mount Kailash, said her family arrived in Kathmandu to search for answers after losing contact with her following the flooding .

Meanwhile, in the U.S., flash flooding in Grand Canyon National Park killed two people and left more than 20 missing over the weekend. Heavy rainfall destroyed trails, footbridges and water infrastructure, forcing 62 helicopter rescues. Authorities warned of further storms and potential new flash floods .

In Algeria, wildfires killed at least 12 people and injured 54 in the northeast, prompting President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to seek the death penalty for those responsible for starting the fires .
