Manchester City found guilty of 114 Premier League financial rule breaches: sanctions pending
Manchester City has been found guilty of 114 out of 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules, according to reports by BBC Sport, The Athletic, and The Times on Friday. An independent panel has reached its decision, though sanctions have not yet been determined, the sources said.
The Premier League declined to comment, citing the confidentiality of the process. Manchester City, in a statement to The Athletic, said the league’s process remains ongoing with “significant elements to be completed” and is subject to strict confidentiality. The club added it has “diligently respected due process for eight years” under the expectation that the league would act as an “independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator.”
BBC Sport reported that City is expected to appeal the findings. Other Premier League clubs have been informed of the panel’s decision, according to the same sources.
The charges stem from a Premier League investigation launched in February 2023, covering alleged breaches between 2009 and 2018. The league accused City of failing to provide accurate financial information, including details on sponsorship revenue and payments to managers and players, as well as non-cooperation with investigations. City has consistently denied the allegations.
In 2020, UEFA initially banned City from European competitions for two years over Financial Fair Play violations, but the club successfully appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which overturned the suspension.
