Russia kills three in Sumy drone strike as Romania downs drone near Ukraine border
Russian drone strikes killed three people in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region on Saturday, local officials said, while Romania shot down a drone over its airspace for the second time in two days.
In the Sumy region, a large fire broke out when a drone struck a "civilian facility," according to Sumy regional head Oleh Hryhorov. The victims were identified as drivers for the private Ukrainian postal and courier service Nova Poshta.
Meanwhile, Romania’s defense ministry reported that its forces "safely shot down" a drone breaching its airspace in an "unpopulated area" near the Ukrainian border. Romanian President Nicușor Dan stated that the drone was "shot down by a Romanian pilot from an F-16 aircraft."
The incidents come as Ukrainian forces launched a massive drone attack on Russian regions and Crimea overnight. According to Russian media reports, over 300 Ukrainian drones targeted various sites, including Belgorod’s Yuzhnaya substation and Luch power plant. A fire also broke out at a military unit in Engels. Russia claims to have destroyed 328 drones.
In Ukraine, a Russian missile strike on a defense industry event near Kyiv killed at least 10 people and wounded nearly 100 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned in his evening address on Friday that intelligence assessments indicated Russia was preparing missiles for a large attack on Ukraine within the next 48 hours.
The strikes on Ukrainian soil included a drone attack on a shopping center in Zaporizhzhia, causing a fire that spread over a 500-square-meter area and resulting in several injuries. In Sloviansk, a Russian aerial bomb attack killed five people and injured nine.
Ukrainian drone strikes have also targeted logistics centers belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer. At least nine Wildberries warehouses have been hit in the past week. The attacks have destroyed inventory worth billions of dollars, with most of the losses falling on independent merchants whose stock was stored in the warehouses.
In the Kharkiv region, Russian forces struck with missiles, guided aerial bombs, and drones, killing one person and injuring 14. The attacks damaged infrastructure facilities and residential buildings.
Ukrainian officials have claimed that the targeted Wildberries warehouses were used by Russians to buy military equipment. The attacks have caused significant financial losses, with estimates reaching about $2.2 billion in destroyed merchandise alone.
