Walter Koenig, the actor best known for playing Ensign Pavel Chekov in *Star Trek*, has died at 90.

His representative, Zachery McGinnis, said Koenig died at his home in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, surrounded by his daughter and niece . The cause was old age, according to McGinnis .

Koenig joined *Star Trek* in its second season in 1967 as the youthful Russian navigator, a role created to appeal to younger viewers and reflect Cold War-era optimism about international cooperation . He appeared in 36 episodes of the original series and reprised the character in seven *Star Trek* films from 1979 to 1994 .

George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu on the show, called Koenig “a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend” in a social media post . Takei added that Koenig “understood what *Star Trek* meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it” .

Born in Chicago on September 14, 1936, to Russian Jewish immigrants, Koenig studied at UCLA and the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York before beginning his acting career . He later worked as a director, screenwriter, and occasional teacher, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012 .

Koenig’s son, Andrew, an actor known for *Growing Pains*, died by suicide in 2010 at 41 . His wife, actress Judy Levitt, died in 2022 . He is survived by his daughter, Danielle Koenig, an actress and writer .
