Scientists have cracked the four-letter code of a 400-year-old combination lock recovered from a treasure-laden shipwreck off the coast of Wales.

The lock came from the Ann Francis, a merchant ship that sank during a storm in 1583. Researchers from Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru used advanced scanning technology to examine the artifact.

Medical scanning technology enabled the team to open the mechanism, which had remained closed since 1583. The discovery has solved a mystery surrounding the vessel.
