The U.S. strikes were the eighth consecutive night of attacks against Iran, following the collapse of an interim ceasefire deal last week. Iran condemned the strikes and warned of retaliation.
In Kyiv, the overnight attack caused fires and damage across several districts, including residential buildings and a shopping center. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 18 of the 41 missiles launched, as well as 108 of the 125 drones, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Nearly 600 rescuers are responding to the attack.
Zelensky called for increased pressure on Moscow to end the attacks. "Russia launched the largest number of ballistic missiles since the beginning of the war — about 40 — in a violent terrorist attack against the Ukrainian capital, resulting in deaths and injuries," Zelensky said on social media. "We demand an appropriate and strong response. We need overwhelming pressure on Moscow to end this terror."
The attack on Kyiv is part of an ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with Russia launching almost daily attacks on Ukrainian cities. In the past week alone, Russia has used approximately 1,450 drones, 1,640 guided aerial bombs, and 99 missiles against Ukraine, according to Zelensky.
The U.S. strikes on Iran come amid escalating tensions in the region, with both sides exchanging attacks over the past week. The U.S. has vowed to continue its strikes until Iran ceases its attacks on U.S. forces and allies in the region.
