Deep Purple has postponed its entire European and UK tour after singer Ian Gillan, 81, suffered a medical emergency in Leipzig and was hospitalized.
The British hard rock band announced on Monday that it would suspend all remaining concerts on medical advice after Gillan was treated in hospital in Leipzig. The cancellations extend beyond the already called-off shows in Leipzig on Saturday and Hamburg on Sunday. They now include Dortmund on Tuesday, Berlin on Wednesday, Frankfurt on Friday, Nuremberg on Saturday, and a planned performance at Amsterdam's Ziggo Dome next week.
In a personal statement posted on Instagram, Gillan thanked fans for their well-wishes and apologized for the inconvenience. He said he had hoped to finish the tour, but doing so would have involved "very serious risks." The decision to interrupt the tour was made jointly with his medical team and management.
The band said it is already working on rescheduled dates, though no timeline has been set. Tickets already purchased will remain valid for the replacement concerts.
Numerous fans posted messages of sympathy under the band's Instagram statement, wishing Gillan a speedy recovery. Deep Purple had performed in Vienna on 5 October and recently played in Stockholm and Gothenburg.
