President Donald Trump said on Monday that negotiations with Iran were underway and that Tehran faced a “last chance” to sign a deal to end the five-month conflict, warning of “decapitation” if no agreement was reached. Trump told reporters at the White House that the talks included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing Iran’s nuclear program, adding, “We’re talking about the Strait, the opening of the Strait, having it open literally by tomorrow, completely open” .
Iran’s Foreign Ministry denied any direct talks with the United States. Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Iran was in discussions with Oman about a “temporary” route to ensure ship safety in the strait, not about fully reopening the waterway. He stated that as long as U.S. “aggression” continued, the situation would not change . Mohsen Rezaei, a senior military adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, warned that U.S. vessels enforcing a naval blockade would face “serious risks and casualties” .
Early Tuesday, a cargo vessel was struck by an “unknown projectile” in the Strait of Hormuz off Oman’s coast, according to Britain’s maritime security agency UKMTO . Iran’s state media did not confirm involvement, but Tehran has previously vowed to target any U.S. warships attempting to alter shipping routes in the strait .
Trump claimed the talks were proceeding at the request of Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. He also said he had canceled a planned military strike, describing it as the “biggest attack since World War II,” to allow diplomacy to proceed . Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran does not seek regional escalation but would use all means to defend its security .
Oil prices fluctuated as markets monitored the developments. Brent crude rose 1.53% to $85.04 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate gained 1.11% to $81.22 .
